Marianne's Response

Dry, cold garden soil

Much of the soil in my garden is very dry. It is freezing at night but in the 40’s during the day. Is it safe to water the shrubs in these conditions?

Yes, it is safe to water when the temps are at 40 degrees but most likely extra water is not necessary. When winter weather comes the trees and shrubs go dormant and do not need extra water. This dormancy is what helps them survive freezing temperatures so it is best to let them sleep it off until winter is over. Meanwhile, notice what plants are blooming now. Snowdrops, crocus and hellebores still come up even when winter lasts extra long as they do not go winter dormant. Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
