Marianne's Response

Fall planting

I think I read in a recent column of yours that there are seeds I can plant for more crops, even this late. Am I right?

Marianne's Response

Fall planting can be successful for some crops such as garlic and the seeds of hardy, leafy greens such as arugala and kale but early September is the best time to plant them in Western Washington so they can establish themselves before the first hard frost that usually strikes at the end of October. There are also seeds of poppies, calendula and alyssum that can be planted in the fall. Don't give up if you would like to try fall planting - just protect any new seedlings that sprout before the frost with a cold frame or Remay agricultural fleece. A hoop house of plastic set over a crop of fall planted greens can also protect a fall garden from winter weather. Experiment and see how it goes - gardening is an adventure and seeds are inexpensive so have some fun. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
