Hanging baskets

Hi Marianne,
You were kind to answer a question of mine years ago and now I have another.
Every year my wife Amy buys three or four hanging baskets from Costco or the local market. They are not huge pots but after a couple of months they are large and beautiful. They hang in pretty much full afternoon sun [as much as western Wash typically gets].
She waters each of them with two gallons twice daily. Fertilizes them every couple of weeks.
They seem to loose the flowers and turn into yellowing plants by Sept. What can she do to make them last longer?
PS they are pretty much root bound and the second gallon of water just pours through the bottom.
Thanks,
Jack Douglas

The key to this answer is the plants turning yellow. Lack of fertilizer, cold weather or not enough water are just a few things that can cause foliage to yellow. First I would add Osmocote to the soil of any hanging basket even if you are watering with a liquid plant food every couple of weeks. As the plants grow they require more fertilizer. Second if the water pours through the bottom you may not be getting the parched soil saturated with water. Try watering once, letting them drain then watering a second and a third time until the pots feel heavy and the soil is saturated. Third, they type of plants in those baskets will determine how they look after a long, hot summer. Super petunias, ivy geraniums and foliage plants like Dusty Miller last longer than regular petunias, lobelia and many other annuals. With these tips your hanging baskets should remain green and in bloom until the first hard frost - usually in mid October in your region. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
