Marianne's Response

Leaves fell off…

My Lemon Lace elderberry was so nice all summer then last week as shown it looked weepy, and the next day all the leaves fell off. What could have happened????

So sorry about your elderberry - did you mean to attach a photo of it looking weepy? I could not see any image but here is my best guess: This tough shrub will drop leaves due to a frost or if it is shocked from lack of water or root damage. Do you have moles, mice or moles? Check for runways near the root zone. The good news is that this time of year shrubs can lose foliage, go to sleep for the winter and come back refreshed (and perhaps with some new roots) in the spring. I suggest you prune your elderberry in the spring cutting it back hard to within a foot of ground level. I suspect it will grow back quickly and give you another summer of that lemony yellow foliage. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
