Poinsettia

My Christmas Poinsettia still looks as vibrant since the day I received it at a Christmas Church dinner. When the Summer season approaches, is it safe to put it outside on my front porch? How do you care for one in the later months, now that they are so hardy?

First congrats on taking good care of your poinsettia. The new varieties can thrive for years if you keep from frost so don't put yours outdoors until summer is really here to stay. The red leaf bracts are sensitive to day length so if you want you poinsettia to bloom again you may have a bit of a challenge. They need to be in a room of total darkness at night to set bud. It is best to just enjoy this gift plant as a houseplant until it becomes too large and leggy then add it to the compost pile. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
