From the image you sent it looks like a Ti plant, or Cordyline fruticose. These are often grown as houseplants or used outdoors in tropical climates. Often sold in Hawaii as started from "logs" or sections of the stem laid flat onto the ground. There are many named forms some with black, red, yellow and variegated leaves. Can grow 15 feet tall in warm climate. Likes full sun or partial shade. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
