Marianne's Response

Do paperwhites and snowdrops cause other flowers to wilt?

When cut paperwhites are added to a vase of other cut flowers, do the paperwhites produce a chemical that makes the other cut flowers wilt?

Same question of snowdrops?

Marianne's Response

Yes, the paperwhites are a type of daffodil, and all daffs leak a sticky clear sap that blocks the uptake of water if other cut flowers share the vase. Snowdrops or Galanthus are early flowering bulbs that dry out quickly both as bulbs and when used as cut flowers. For this reason snowdrops are rarely used as cut flowers unless picked and displayed the same day - one tip to keep them in flower indoors longer is to dig the bulb and all, pack the lower part of the bulb and roots in damp moss wrapped with plastic, and place this moisture filled plastic baggy holding the bulb into arrangements. Daffodils can be used in mixed arrangements by placing water filled flower tubes into a bouquet and inserting the stem of each daffodil into a separate tube. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
