Marianne's Response

Home gardeners have had success growing just about every edible plant in containers if the pot is big enough but for smaller containers stick with tomatoes, leaf crops, peppers, squash, bush cucumbers and herbs. Root crops such as carrots and beets need a deep container at least 24 inches tall. All containers need more water and fertilizer than if the plants were growing in the ground. This is because the plants cannot send their roots out to a wide area to find food and water. To really get specific information about growing crops in pots you may want to get the excellent book "The Bountiful Container" written by Rose Marie Nichols McGee. You can order it from Amazon or your local library. Keep growing - especially in containers. Marianne Binetti
