Marianne's Response

My strange crape myrtle bush

One of my crape myrtle bushes is growing some branches that look completely different from the rest of the plant. They look like some crape myrtle trees that grown in the area. What’s going on?

You have a hostile take over on your hands. The strange new growth is coming from the grafted portion of the tree and will overtake the less vigorous variety you have unless you cut out the new growth as it appears. Follow the branch to the source at the trunk and try to tug it away to remove the growth eye so it will not come back. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
