Sago Palm

How do I care for a sago palm I received for mother’s day. I live in northwest Tennessee

Marianne's Response

The sago palm is not really a palm at all but a member of the Cycad family. It can overwinter outdoors in zone 8 or warmer so you can decide if you want to keep it as houseplant or outdoors growing in the ground. If grown outdoors it must have excellent drainage and be mulched heavily after the fronds turn yellow in winter. Indoors grow in bright light and water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Fertilize every spring with a slow release plant food like Osmocote. Enjoy your living memory of Mother's Day. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
