Marianne's Response

St. Augustine grass is a course grass that does well in the warm south. It does tend to form thatch but is shade tolerant so used for lawns. This grass is popular with cinch bugs. The problem with letting it grow unmowed (other than the cinch bugs)  is that the seed heads may spread to your neighbors and if you live in a typical suburban neighborhood the unkept look of an un mowed grass may not be popular....and some neighborhoods have ordinances about allowing lawn grasses to grow tall. There are other ornamental grasses planted to be uncut with a more ornamental look. Keep growing...or mowing, Marianne Binetti
