Marianne's Response

Wild Violets

My flower beds are being taken over my wild violets. No mater how many times I pull them out they keep coming back two fold. What can I use to kill them with out killing my flowers and bulbs?

Marianne's Response

So sorry - wild violets are tough to eradicate but I did the job in one of my beds by smothering them with newspapers and wood chips. I let the other flowers emerge cut kept pulling any of the weak violets that popped up. The trick is to keep the soil mulched as the seeds need sunlight and violets drop a lot of seeds so if you pull them the seeds keep them coming back. Mulch and persistence will win out I the end.
