Marianne's Response

African Mask

I have a plant I’ve been told is an African Mask plant. I can’t seem to find information on how to care of it. Can you help me?

The real name of your beautiful houseplant is Alocasia but it does look like an African mask. It is a tropical plant that needs warm temps so at night the air should be above 60 degrees even in winter. It loves water so keep soil moist but in the winter when light is low cut back on water. Mist the leaves daily as it needs high humidity. This plant does best in a warm greenhouse as mose homes do not have enough humidity. A bathroom with a window and lots of humidity would make it happy. It needs semi shade in summer and bright light in winter. Set the pot on a bed of pebbles and water to help raise the humidity. Your houseplant is unusual, gorgeous but temperamental. This diva is worth all the extra work so just grow for it. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
