Marianne's Response

Watering

How often should I water my garden? I have cucumbers, tomatoes, dill. We live in a dry climate. And hot. Some days of summer will be 110 degrees. Southeastern Colorado!

Marianne's Response

I wish I could give you a simple answer but how much water a garden needs depends on the soil, mulch, climate, crop and sun exposure. Poke your finger into the soil and feel at least one inch down. For young plants the top few inches of soil should be moist. Later in the summer the plants will have deeper roots and you may be able to go a few days or even a week without adding water if your soil is mulched. My  best advice is to look closely for signs of thirsty plants such as a slight wilt or dull look to the foliage then soak the soil down to a depth of 12 inches. Drip irrigation would be best.  Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
